Luxe Layers

A celebration of design and connection at the Indiana Design Center

The Indiana Design Center was abuzz with creative energy in November as designers, artisans and design enthusiasts gathered for Luxe Layers: A Celebration and Book Signing with Kendall Wilkinson in two special events. Acclaimed San Francisco designer Kendall Wilkinson (known for her timeless, layered interiors and warm, approachable style) gathered first for a trade event hosted in partnership with Drapery Street, then for a ticketed public event the following evening hosted by the Indiana Design Center, both featuring conversation and connection that beautifully bridged coasts and communities.
At the evening event, opening in the IDC’s Grand Hall, guests mingled over wine and hors d’oeuvres before settling in for a lively chat between Wilkinson and IndyNOW’s Ryan Ahlwardt. Wilkinson shared insights from her latest book, Beauty All Around, released in May 2025, which celebrates the emotional core of design and the meaningful layers that make a home personal. “Beautiful work comes from deep listening,” she explained. “It’s about understanding the emotional undercurrent of a home and allowing rooms to evolve naturally.”

For Wilkinson, the IDC was the ideal venue. “It truly functions as a heartbeat for the region’s design community,” she said. “The enthusiasm, curiosity and connection in the room made the evening feel incredibly special.” That connection was echoed by event partner and Drapery Street owner Caryn O’Sullivan, whose showroom hosted a morning brunch in Wilkinson’s honor. “It was inspiring to see how Kendall’s philosophy resonated so deeply with local designers,” O’Sullivan noted. “Her visit reminded us that great design is about relationships between people, materials and moments.”

Designers and guests alike echoed that sentiment. “The book signing was a highlight not just for me but for the entire design community,” said Sallie Lord of GreyHunt Interiors, who helped orchestrate the event. “Kendall shared so much knowledge, warmth and genuine care that we all felt like we were sitting in a one-on-one conversation with her. The IDC team made everything beautiful, from the flowers to the tablescapes, and the whole day left me so inspired.”
Following the talk, attendees explored IDC showrooms, where tabletop displays by local designers showcased the art of layered living, a fitting complement to Wilkinson’s ethos. Conversations flowed easily, touching on design philosophies, client stories, and the shared pursuit of creating spaces that feel deeply human.

Reflecting on the evening, Wilkinson said she was struck by how thoughtful, collaborative and curious the community is. “There’s a groundedness here—a balance between craftsmanship, comfort and experimentation,” she says, adding that she left Carmel inspired by the warmth and talent in the room.

The event proved more than a celebration of a book. It was a testament to the creative spirit thriving in Indiana’s design scene. Through partnerships between local leaders like Drapery Street, the Indiana Design Center, and national voices like Kendall Wilkinson, the region continues to affirm its place as a vibrant, connected hub for design excellence.
