Faces of Women in Business By Susan Salaz
Every October, we celebrate National Women's Small Business Month by honoring the area's top entrepreneurs in a range of industries. Let us introduce you to this year's extraordinary women in business.
The past two-and-a-half years have seen both challenges and successes for large and small companies alike. Gaps in equality, weaknesses in the supply chain and concerns in the economy have been laid bare, leaving the landscape of business forever changed. According to Fortune magazine, more than 1 million women have left the workforce since February 2020. Despite these shifts, however, many companies have made progress in diversity and inclusion initiatives, allowing for more women to take on leadership, ownership and entrepreneurial roles.
Did you know that Carmel City Center has one of the highest concentrations of female-owned enterprises in the area, with women at the helm of more than half of the businesses in the development? You can find Ruthanne Burgard there at Out of the Blue Polish Pottery and Gifts, but you can also find these talented gals at the Indiana Design Center, Clay Terrace, the Shoppes at 56th and Illinois, in Zionsville, Broad Ripple and on Main Street in Carmel. Don’t just read about them here—visit their businesses, follow them on social media and support their efforts, because we all enjoy the benefits that small businesses bring, through jobs, revenue and economy to loyalty, friendship and community identity.
